Perjanjian Tuntang merupakan peristiwa historis yang sangat penting. Adapun bunyi Politik Kontrak antara Sri Paku Alam I dengan Gubernur Jenderal Raffles sebagai utusan Negeri Inggris pada tanggal 17 Maret 1813. Traktat politik Tuntang itu selengkapnya adalah sebagai berikut:
Generasi muda perlu belajar sejarah. “Perjanjian yang dibuat antara John Crawfurd Residen Yogyakarta, untuk itu diberi kuasa penuh oleh Thomas Stamford Raffles, Letnan Gubernur Jenderal dari pulau Jawa dan sekitarnya di satu pihak dan Pangeran Paku Alam di pihak lain secara rinci bunyi perjanjian itu dapat dibaca dengan saksama :
Pasal 1
Karena Gubernur Inggris sepenuhnya yakin tentang kesetiaan dan jasa-jasa Pangeran Paku Alam, maka Gubernur Inggris akan memberi perlindungan secara langsung kepada Sri Paku Alam dan keluarganya.
Pasal 2
Gubernur Inggris berjanji, selama Pangeran Paku Alam bersikap dengan kehendak Inggris, akan memberikan tunjangan bulanan kepada Sri Paku Alam sebesar 750 real seumur hidup, dan gubermen Inggris akan mengusahakan agar Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono III memberi tanah kepada Sri Paku Alam sebesar 4000 cacah, dan bahwa tunjangan bulanan dan tanah itu setelah Sri Paku Alam mangkat, akan beralih kepada puteranya yang tertua Pangeran Suryaningrat.
Pasal 3
Pemberian tanah kepada Sri Paku Alam itu akan tetap dijamin oleh gubermen Inggris, dan tanah itu akan diatur serta diperintah sesuai dengan kehendak gubermen Inggris.
Pasal 4
Di daerah-daerah yang berada di bawah kekuasaan Sri Paku Alam, tidak akan dipungut pajak- pajak baru, dan penghasilan tanahnya tidak boleh ditambah atau dirubah, kecuali jika sudah mendapatkan ijin lebih dahulu dari gubermen Inggris.
Pasal 5
Sri Paku Alam berjanji untuk memelihara korps dragonders sebanyak 100 orang untuk kepentingan gubermen Inggris, berdasarkan syarat-syarat seperti diatur dalam pasal-pasal di bawah ini.
Pasal 6
Korps tersebut dipersenjatai dan diberi uniform oleh gubermen Inggris, sedangkan Sri Paku Alam mengurus tentang kuda dan perlengkapannya.
Pasal 7
Sri Paku Alam berjanji, kecuali akan memberi suplay kepada korps juga untuk memberi gaji bulanan sebagai berikut: Sersan 3 real, Kopral 2 ½ real, Serdadu 2 real.
Pasal 8
Korps secara teratur akan mendapat latihan dari seorang Inggris yang diangkat untuk tugas itu, dan tidak akan ada serdadu yang dapat dipecat oleh Sri Paku Alam tanpa ijin gubermen Inggris.
Pasal 9
Pada akhirnya ditentukan, bahwa kecuali korps di atas Sri Paku Alam atau keluarganya dengan alasan apapun juga tidak diperkenankan untuk memelihara atau mengerahkan sebuah pasukan militer.

Perjanjian Paku Alam – Inggris
“Contract and Engagement entered into and agreed upon, between John Crawfurd Esq., Resident at the Court of the Sultan of Java, duly authorized there to by the Hon. Th. S. Raffles, Lieut. Governor of the island of Java and its Dependencies, on the one side, and the Prince Pangeran Paku Alam, on the other”.
Art. 1
Whereas the British Government are entertaining a high sense of the fidelity, attachement and public services of the Prince Paku Alam, they are hereby placed to take Him and his family under their own immdiate protection.
Art. 2
The British Government stipulate to pay to the Prince Paku alam during his lifetime and while he conducts himself to their entire satisfaction, a monthly stipend of 753 Sp. Dollars, and they further engage to make arrangements with H.H. the Sultan of Java, by which the Prince shall be placed in possession of lands to the full amount of 4000 Chachas, to be in like mannor hold during his life and good behaviour, and to descend to his eldest son, the Prince Suryo Ningrat, to be held on similar terms and conditions.
Art. 3
The lands in question shall be held under the guarrantee of the British Government, and be subject to which form of administration and government, as the said British Government may be pleased hereafter to establish; and it is more particularly provided that they shall b subject to any modifications that may become necessary in he special arrangements which are in contemplation for the territories of Their H.H. the Soosoohonan and Sultan.
Art. 4
In the lands now given to the Price Paku Alam it shall be fully understood, that no new taxes shall be levied nor shall the present Revenue be in any manner increased or altered without the express consent of the British Government.
Art. 5
In consideration of the benefits conferred upon the Prince Paku Alam, he hereby stipulates, to support and maintain for the service of the British Government a Corps of One hundred Horse, under the terms and conditions specified in the following articles.
Art. 6
The Corps shall be armed and clothed by the British Government, in such manner as they may deem most expedient, the Prince on his part supplying horses, accoutrements and neccessaries.
Art. 7
The Prince Paku Alam stipulates and engages, that, besides the ordinary rations of rice, his Corps shall be paid at the following monthly rates : to a Sergeant 3 Sp. D, to a Corporal 2 ½ Sp. D, to a Private 2 Sp. D.
Art. 8
The Corps shall be regularly mustered by an Officer of the British Government, appointed for this purpose, and no individual, of which it consist, shall be discharged en any account without the express permission of the said Government.
Art. 9
Finally, it shall be fully understood, that except the Corps now alluded to, neither the Prince Paku Alam or any of his family shall directly, on any account, maintain any other species of military force or establishment.
The proposed Engagement is approved and sanctioned.
